The eighth day was spent driving from Agra to Ranthambhore. We left my guide Sonny at Fatehpur Sikri and my driver Rajendar and I drove across the dusty desert of Rajasthan. We did stop at the Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary, but it was the off season and so there were virtually no birds there.
Fatehpur Sikri
We drove to Fatehpur Sikri, 'the city of victory', which was the capital city of the Mughal Empire from 1571 - 1585. It was built by Akbar the Great. It was almost his perfect city. The only problem was the lack of water. So soon the city was abandoned. Thankfully it was well preserved.
** One of the greatest mistakes people make is to take a day trip from Delhi to Agra, they see the Taj for a few hours and then drive back. They don't even hear about Fatehpur Sikri. This is a big big big mistake! My pictures don't even begin to capture of elegance and mystery of this amazing 'ghost town'. PLEASE PLEASE go to see it if you are planning a trip to Agra. **
